Project Overview
The Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) is a three-year, course-based graduate degree accredited by the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Council (LAAC) of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA). As Alberta’s only professionally accredited landscape architecture program, the MLA equips future design leaders with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking to address the environmental and societal challenges of our time
Project Scope
To support graduate recruitment efforts and promote the MLA program, I designed a branded booklet introducing prospective students to the faculty, curriculum, program highlights, and opportunities. The design also served as a flexible template adaptable for future program-specific materials, ensuring visual consistency across SAPL’s graduate offerings..

The brief
The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, University of Calgary, required a high-quality print piece to position the MLA program as a leader in landscape architecture education while attracting prospective students aligned with the School’s mission.
The booklet needed to seamlessly reflect SAPL’s established visual identity, communicate the unique value of the MLA program, and serve as a flexible template for future graduate program marketing. The design was expected to balance SAPL’s bold, modern academic brand with themes rooted in environmental design, delivering a professional, visually compelling resource that speaks to both prospective students and institutional stakeholders.

Design Approach
I approached the design with a focus on versatility, functionality, and a visual language that reflects both SAPL’s bold identity and the program’s connection to the natural environment.
Key Design Elements:
Structured, easy-to-navigate chapters with the use of bold block text treatments covering Introduction, Curriculum, Features, and Funding
A consistent three-column grid system allowing for alternating use of text blocks and imagery, providing layout flexibility
UCalgary’s secondary color palette of teal and taupe, selected to reflect the environmental focus of the MLA discipline
Layout flexibility enabling future adaptation of the design as a template for other SAPL program materials
Print Finishing Recommendation
The booklet was printed with a matte (dull) cover finish and matte text paper for the interior pages. The matte finish offers a refined, premium look that reflects the professional and academic tone of the program while minimising glare for easier readability.

Impact
The final booklet provided SAPL with a polished, professional resource that enhances recruitment efforts while reinforcing the MLA program’s identity as a leader in landscape architecture education.
Its modular design allows SAPL to efficiently produce future program-specific marketing materials with consistent structure and visual cohesion. The project supports SAPL’s goal of inspiring bold design thinkers to address pressing environmental and societal challenges.
